A Turn of Time
Cycles and Thresholds
There is a particular moment each night when time completes another cycle.
The hours of a day begin again.
Today becomes yesterday.
Tomorrow becomes today.
For a moment, we are at the threshold between them.
I have been thinking about that moment.
A day can contain a great deal.
We can fill its hours with work, laughter, frustration, progress, uncertainty, mistakes, conversations, waiting, ordinary routines, and things we never anticipated when we started the day.
Some days leave us wanting more.
Some leave us ready for midnight.
Either way, time is out of our hands.
The clock completes its cycle.
A new day begins.
There is something hopeful about the dependability of that.
Midnight does not ask whether the day went well.
It does not wait until everything is resolved.
It does not require us to understand everything the day contained.
The hands meet.
Then they move forward.
Maybe we can, too.
We can release the grip of a difficult moment.
We can loosen our attachment to how we thought the day should have gone.
We can allow disappointment to belong to yesterday without deciding what it means for tomorrow.
We can carry forward what matters and give the rest a little less weight.
Then we face a day that has never existed before.
Its hours are still ahead of us.
Beginning again does not require beginning from zero.
We wake with memories, responsibilities, relationships, consequences, hopes, and plans.
Yesterday remains part of us.
And still, today is new.
Its conversations have not happened.
Its choices have not been made.
Its possibilities have not been experienced.
Something may feel different.
Something may change.
We may respond differently.
Something we cannot anticipate may become part of the day.
The movement of the hands mark more than the passage of time.
It marks a threshold.
Every today eventually becomes a yesterday.
Every tomorrow eventually becomes today.
And we keep becoming along with them.
One cycle ends.
Another begins.
And we move forward with it.
A Gentle Reflection
If it feels useful, you might notice:
something from yesterday that can stay with yesterday
what you would like to carry into a new day
how it feels to think of midnight as a threshold between one day and the next
the possibilities contained in a day you have not yet experienced
Every day eventually reaches midnight.
The hands meet.
And time moves forward.
So do we.
