Befriending Time
What Was, What Is, and What Is Yet to Be
There was a time when I didn't give much thought to growing older.
The years collected almost unnoticed.
Eventually, I began recognizing small changes.
Recovering from a long day took a little longer.
Interests shifted.
Priorities became clearer.
Some ambitions grew stronger.
Others gradually faded without feeling like a loss.
I found myself realizing that the earlier version of myself was no longer with me.
That person with endless energy.
That person who believed anything was possible.
That person who believed there would always be another season to pursue the next and the more.
Then something changed, and I began noticing.
This season taught me things that earlier seasons did not.
Experience has deepened my appreciation for relationships that endure.
It has made ordinary days feel more meaningful.
It has helped me recognize what deserves my attention and what I am ready to release.
Some things have become more difficult.
Some have become unexpectedly easier.
Both belong to the same story. My story.
My story of growing older has become a story of appreciating time and the person who continues living it.
A Gentle Reflection
If it feels useful, you might notice:
something about yourself that has changed over the years
a quality that experience has strengthened
something you no longer need to carry
one part of this season of life that you genuinely appreciate
We often carry an internal picture of ourselves through life.
Time, experience, and changing circumstances gradually change the person living that life.
Growth sometimes begins with recognizing that difference and becoming acquainted with the person we are today.
There may be more wonder in that than we sometimes realize.
